3D Ultrasound Pictures Show Human Life In Its Earliest Form
With reference to the article “3-D snapshots from the womb” on Sept 27, I read with great interest about the pictures taken when the lady was 7 ½ months pregnant. It was clearly not very different from those taken of my son at 23 weeks and 2 days (See attached). From the pictures, is there any doubt that a baby at 23 weeks and 2 days is as alive as one at 24 weeks and 1 day or 7 ½ months? He or she is as alive as a baby who is born at 40 weeks, given the distinct and unique facial features and physical features and sex already well defined. However, it would interesting to note that Termination of Pregnancy Act allows the legal termination of babies up to 24 weeks of gestational age.
In my opinion, given what we can observe about the development of the baby today, no man nor woman nor doctor nor state law nor government has the right to terminate the life of this early human being in any situation. Nevertheless, we do not judge the reasons why women and couples choose to terminate their pregnancies, which incidentally in 2007 number around 11,933 in Singapore, an average of 32 per day.
Instead, I would wish that for women and couples who are not ready to have a child, they should choose not to engage in any sexual activities which would bring about an unwanted pregnancy. To take an analogy, if we do not want to go to Woodlands, then we should not board a train which is clearly going to Woodlands. Often, woman and couples have minimal knowledge about their reproductive anatomy and how it really works, this can be an area of education to look into to preempt any risky sexual activities leading to a possible abortion.
In a pragmatic society like Singapore, it will be difficult to ban abortion however I hope that women and couples can make the Termination Of Pregnancy Act obsolete by choosing life or adoption over abortion.

Being Pro-Life
What does it mean to be pro-life?
To me, it means to support life wherever possible. No to abortion, No to contraception. Welcoming Life in all its forms, no matter how imperfect.
